Position Title: Laboratory Animal Technician
Position Status: Full-time
Campus: Western University Campus-Pomona, CA
The employee reports to University Attending Veterinarian. Under minimal supervision, he/she will provide skilled care and handling of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner. Primary working areas include standard housing areas as well as specialized areas including, but not limited to, USDA housing areas, bio-hazardous areas, and animal colonies requiring specialized procedures. Also responsible for limited supervisory duties including direction and oversight of work but excluding discipline. Employee will ensure that the facilities and personnel are in compliance with standards set forth by NIH and USDA as well as the IACUC and Institutional SOP.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Properly evaluating the facts and information relative to the animal care and welfare. Ability to accurately and clearly describe and record observations, calculations, and findings. Ability to accurately assess the habits, behavior, and physical appearance of an animal to obtain accurate research findings. Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to multitask in a busy research setting.
Education Required: High School diploma or GED. Experience Required: Two years of relevant experience. Certification/Licenses/Registration: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.
Veterinary Technician California license, Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) AALAS Certifications are preferred.

Weekdays/Weekends; 40 hours per week As continuous animal care is needed, rotating schedule will be established which includes weekends and holidays. Animal surgery and postoperative care may be required to work after hours.
